Coinciding with the start of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, freedom-loving Iranians held vigils to protest against the participation of the Iranian regime’s Foreign Minister at the UN Human Rights Forum. The demonstrators demanded accountability for four decades of crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the regime.
The vigils, organized by Iranian activists and supporters of human rights, aimed to draw international attention to the ongoing atrocities in Iran. Notable speakers at the vigil included Professor Alfred-Maurice de Zayas, a renowned jurist and author on human rights and international law, and Paolo Girardi, the chairman of Geneva’s trade unions.
Speeches and Demonstrations
Paolo Girardi: Highlighted the widespread protests and strikes in Iran, involving workers, nurses, teachers, and other professionals. He emphasized the solidarity with the Iranian people, pointing out that 80% of Iran’s population lives in absolute poverty.
Alfred-Maurice de Zayas: Spoke about the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk’s plan to promote human rights. He stressed the importance of using all known mechanisms, such as the International Criminal Court, to ensure accountability.
Saeed, Iranian Human Rights Activist: Expressed support for the brave women who led the 2022 protests and showed solidarity with heroines like Maryam Akbari, Forough Taghipour, and Zahra Safaei, who continue to resist torture in Iranian prisons.
Organizing such events amidst increasing repression poses significant challenges. However, the determination and unity of the participants help overcome these obstacles. The speeches and presence of international figures bolster the visibility and impact of these protests.
The vigils in Geneva and other Swiss cities highlight the persistent struggle for human rights in Iran and the international solidarity supporting this cause. These activities underscore the need for continued global attention and action against the Iranian regime’s human rights violations.
