Iran: Shocking violence by morality police – iranian woman critically injured

Alarming incident sparks global outrage

A shocking event from Iran has generated worldwide condemnation. On July 23, 2024, 31-year-old Arezou Badri, a mother of two, was gravely injured by Iran’s “Morality Police,” a force tasked with enforcing strict hijab laws. The officers shot Arezou as she resisted the seizure of her car for failing to adhere to mandatory veiling regulations.

A tragedy with international consequences

Arezou Badri is now fighting for her life at the Valiasr Hospital in Tehran, where she has already undergone two major surgeries. She sustained severe injuries to her spine and lungs and has been in a coma since. Her condition remains critical, and she is now paralyzed from the waist down.

The incident occurred in the northern Iranian city of Noor, after which the severely injured woman was first taken to a hospital in Sari and later transferred to Tehran. Under heavy police surveillance, Arezou’s case is being downplayed by authorities attempting to conceal and misrepresent the details of the incident.

International reactions and demands

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has strongly condemned the Iranian regime, demanding an immediate halt to violence against women in Iran. According to international law, enforced hijab regulations violate fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression, thought, conscience, religion, and the right to privacy.

This brutal enforcement of hijab laws, often accompanied by arrests and humiliating punishments, constitutes a grave violation of human dignity and could be classified as torture. The international community is urged to increase pressure on the Iranian regime to end its oppression of women’s rights.
