“We Continue Our Resistance”: The Ongoing People’s Movement in Iran

The Iranian people’s movement continues to challenge the oppressive regime. Roya Heshmati, a women’s rights activist, was arrested and sentenced to 74 lashes for posting a photo without a headscarf on social media. Her brave defiance and the subsequent public outcry highlight the resilience and determination of the current generation against repression.

Roya Heshmati’s act of defiance began with a simple yet powerful gesture: posting a photo without a headscarf. This act of rebellion against Iran’s strict dress code led to her arrest and a brutal sentence. Her experience underscores the severe consequences faced by those who stand up to the regime.

Roya shared her harrowing experience in detail on social media, sparking widespread reactions:

“I received a call from the judiciary this morning, summoning me to execute the sentence. Upon entering the courthouse, I removed my headscarf. An officer ordered me to put it back on and follow him. I refused. He threatened me with more lashes. They handcuffed me and forced the headscarf on me. I was taken to a cement-walled room, a medieval torture chamber. Forced onto a bench, a shawl was placed over my head. The executioner took a black leather whip, wrapped it around his hand, and began lashing me repeatedly. I lost count of the blows. I sang a song… ‘May the sunrise follow the dark night…’ which enraged him.

When it ended, I showed no pain. They took me to the judge, with a guard ensuring I kept the headscarf on. As we reached the judge’s door, I threw the headscarf to the ground. The guard forced it back on. The judge said I could live abroad if I wanted a different life. I told him, ‘This country belongs to everyone.’ He insisted on following the law. I replied, ‘Let the law do its job; we will continue our resistance.’ Leaving the room, I removed the headscarf again.”

Roya’s courageous stand has resonated deeply within Iran and beyond. Her story illustrates the unyielding spirit of Iranian women and their refusal to be silenced. The public’s reaction has been overwhelmingly supportive, highlighting a collective resolve to fight for freedom and equality.

Roya Heshmati’s story is a powerful testament to the enduring resistance against oppression in Iran. Her bravery serves as an inspiration and a call to action for those fighting for human rights and gender equality.
