Repression and Human Rights Violations During the 2022 Uprising in Iran
On March 19, 2024, the United Nations Investigation Commission submitted its first report on the 2022 uprising in Iran to the UN Human Rights Council. Sara Hossain, Chair of the Commission, highlighted the serious violations committed by the Mullah regime, which she classified as crimes against humanity.
“These actions were carried out as part of a broad and systematic attack on women, girls, and other human rights defenders. Some of these violations constitute serious breaches of human rights and should be classified as crimes against humanity,” Hossain declared.
Despite many efforts, the Mullah regime denied entry to the UN Investigation Commission and refused to cooperate in the investigations. Nevertheless, the commission gathered over 27,000 pieces of evidence and conducted 134 in-depth interviews, revealing the full extent of the regime’s repressions.
Sara Hossain particularly emphasized the unlawful killing of Gina Amini, which sparked nationwide protests. In response, security forces used excessive force, leading to the deaths of at least 551 people, including women and children. The most tragic day, known as “Bloody Friday” in Zahedan, claimed 103 lives.
The commission documented deliberate shootings, arbitrary arrests, torture, and unfair trials, including the execution of young men. Hossain highlighted the continued oppression of families and women, further aggravated by the regime’s long-standing impunity.
In her concluding remarks, she stressed, “The bravery of victims, witnesses, and family members who have entrusted us with their stories highlights the urgent need for the international community to stand in solidarity and take concrete action to support the victims. If those responsible for the crimes committed during the protests are not held accountable, the cycle of impunity will not be broken.”
