UN Human Rights Commissioner Calls for an End to Executions in Iran

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has issued a strong condemnation of the Iranian regime, demanding an immediate halt to executions in the country. This call comes in response to a disturbing increase in executions, which the Tehran regime is using as a tool to suppress its population.

A wave of violence

According to the United Nations, the Iranian regime has executed at least 345 people this year alone, including 15 women. Particularly alarming is the fact that in just two days in August, at least 29 people were put to death. This practice starkly violates international human rights standards.

Volker Türk expressed deep concern that many of these executions were carried out without due process and fair trials. In several instances, the executions were carried out without prior notification to the families or legal representatives of those condemned. Ethnic minorities, including Kurds, Ahwazi Arabs, and Baluchis, have been disproportionately affected, facing systematic discrimination.

International Community’s Demands

In light of these severe human rights violations, the UN Human Rights Commissioner has called for an immediate moratorium on executions in Iran, with the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty altogether. The international community is urged to increase pressure on the Iranian regime and ensure adherence to international human rights obligations.

This practice of executions is a blatant violation of the principles of justice and fair trials, and it must be stopped immediately.
